The Best Montana Fly Fishing within easy access of Top Hat Lodge
Musselshell River
The Musselshell river flows through the northern boundary of the ranch. From Twodot Montana downstream for 4 miles to the Hutterite colony. The neighboring ranches are allowing access and we fish approximately eight miles of this winding meadow river. During early spring and summer the river runs full which makes it ideal for float trips, later in the summer when area ranchers pull water out for irrigation it transforms this river into one of the finest wade fishing rivers in the state.

Big Elk Creek
The head waters of this unknown gem start deep in the crazy mountains in Big Elk canyon. The creek runs all of the way through the upper and lower sections of the ranch where it flows into the Musselshell River. There are big browns lurking around every corner looking for a dry fly or streamer. We have private access to this small stream and over twenty miles of fishable water. The chances of you seeing anybody else fishing are slim to none.

Basin Creek
Basin creek is a spring creek that starts on the famous American fork ranch which boarders us to the east. As the creek flows through our property it widens and deepens allowing excellent habitat for brown trout. During the summer months it is a prime untouched dry fly stream with small pools around every corner.

South fork, Middle fork, North fork of American Fork Creek
These three creeks also start deep in the Crazy Mountains and flows through the ranch coming together to form American Fork Creek. These creeks are seasonal creeks to fish with spring runoff making it impossible to fish and the creeks slowing down to a trickle in late summer. The best time it fish these creeks is in June and July where nice browns and brook trout can be found next to the cliffs and cut banks.

Little Calgary Pond
This pond is filled from crooked creek and houses monster brown trout. This shallow pond is filled with all the nutrients needed for fish to grow and it shows. With brown trout ranging from 10” to over 24” this is a fun pond to fish.

Mary’s Pond
This is by far the biggest pond on our property. With depths ranging from 5 feet to 25 feet this mini lake is choked full of brown trout. Shore fish or jump in the boat you will have a blast. Especially when the hatch is on and hundreds of fish are rising making it look like it is raining.

With numerous spring creeks, and various ponds on the property you will not fish the same place twice (if you don’t want to). However we also take short trips to neighboring ranches. All fishing areas are between a half hour to an hour and a half away from the ranch.

Smith River fly fishing is some of the finest dry fly and streamer water for browns and rainbows in a high valley mountain paradise.

Big Spring Creek has the highest water quality and probably the most stable populations of trout specimens of anywhere in the world. Fly fishing Big Spring Creek is an experience you will never forget! Sipping trout around every corner while you plunge through winding bend riffles and flats in search of rising browns and rainbows in gin clear splendor.

Judith River is an amazing trout fishery and Missouri river tributary that flows into the Missouri north of Great falls. It makes it’s headwaters where Big Spring creek and the upper Judith come together in Danvers. We have private access to this hard to reach Montana fishery and will be offering float and wade fly fishing trips in search of monster browns.

Hound Creek flows into the lower smith river and we normally fish up on some private water near the headwaters where big browns move to spawn from the Missouri river.

Big Spring Creek and Warm Spring Creek that flow into the Judith River are home to some of the most sought after trout lies in the world. Pure spring water bubbling up and trout populations that thrive year around with cool water and lots of bug life.

All rivers are easily accessed from the Top Hat Lodge. Fly Fish pristine private water in and around the ranch and reach far out places most have never heard of in search of elusive Missouri run brown trout in small stream settings.
